Daily Dispatches was conceived and carried out by photojournalist Brendan Bannon and journalist Mike Pflanz, who spent the month of April finding stories from all corners of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, with a view to painting a compelling, informative and surprising portrait of the city.
Each day, the images and reports were sent back to select US universities, which in turn printed and mounted them in a rolling exhibition.
Bannon says: “I look at people’s lives as being full of meaningful relationships, striving against the odds and achieving small victories.”

JRNL Editor Matthew Freemantle spent a week travelling south from Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania to Pemba in northern Mozambique. Coincidentally, his company was two Tanzanian boys jumping borders en route to Johannesburg, a city they dreamed of as a land of milk and honey. At the time, the xenophobic violence was at its height across South Africa.
